Service Learning Section

Since 2010, the Service-Learning Section have been established under the Student Affairs Office to promote the pedagogy of service-learning that fulfils students’ strong commitment to the community. The Service-Learning Section plans a variety of service-learning courses for students to contact and get themselves acquainted with various groups of service partners, including physical disabilities, children, senior citizens, environmentalists, reformers in medical practice, advocates for recycling second-hand goods , advocates for community building, educators of English and cultural heritage. Our teachers and students endeavor to collaborate with non-profit organizations or community associations on the principles of mutual benefit. The core objective of our Service-Learning courses is to develop students’ empathy and responsible attitude toward the served persons and their partners, and apply classroom knowledge to serve the service partners. At the beginning of each semester, the Service-Learning Office and teachers organize keynote lectures by experienced practitioners or researchers in order to prepare students for learning from the service and realizing the significance of service-learning. The students are also oriented to reflect on what they do, how they feel and respond, and what’s done.
    In addition,
Service-Learning Section recruits and trains volunteers every year, carrying out their services in Vietnam, Myanmar and the remote areas in Taiwan. For empowering the volunteers, we provide specialized trainings whose qualification is lifelong valid and recognized by the government . Both students and volunteers are required to record what they experience in the service practice, write down their reflection and share performance presentation at the end of their services. We expect students to make use of their skills in the social service to learn to respect the diversity of lives, and to devote themselves to human wellbeingness and our environment.
